Heyne Tillett Steel is an employee-owned structural and civil engineering practice with a reputation for intelligent design and innovative, practical solutions.

Established in 2007 by directors Andy Heyne, Mark Tillett and Tom Steel, the practice is now a Certified B Corporation with over 180 staff members and works with many of the UK’s leading developers and architects.

Based at 16 Chart Street, HTS's is a retrofit of a 1930s former furniture warehouse in Hoxton. The works include a new extension to the existing four-storey building, as well as a new stair and lift core alongside the full internal and external refurbishment.

After 2-years on site the building has been transformed into a modern, interconnected studio space for structural engineering firm Heyne Tillett Steel. The new floor level was conceived as a working studio space and features a flexible, column-free space with four rows of 10m long north-facing windows to maximise indirect light and minimise solar gain.

To the side of the existing building, a new stair and lift core sit alongside a lightweight CLT extension, creating a light-filled space for meetings at upper levels and a new covered entrance to the building. The existing masonry building has capacity for 150 desks and is designed to be both singularly occupied and tenanted to help financially future proof the project.
